Underestimating the risk.  People get in more trouble when they go out to a wilderness locations for a drive, or a short hike . In their mind they believe it is going to be nothing more than a fun family or personal outing. A time to relax and reflect, They are going to stop for a meal, relax in a roadside park, walk a well marked trail. Then Bang  disaster strikes, cell phones does not work, they have no water, are improperly dressed.
