Judge: No journalist protections for blogger
In a ruling with implications for online pundits and commentators, a federal judge in Oregon has ruled a Montana woman sued for defamation of character was not a journalist when she posted on her blog that an Oregon lawyer acted criminally during a bankruptcy case, and thus cannot claim protections afforded to mainstream reporters. U.S. District Judge Marco Hernandez found last week that as a blogger, Crystal L. Cox, from Eureka, Mont. was not covered by state shield laws protecting journalists. AP.
